Anne T. Matthew, R.N. Dec. 28, 1922 - Jan. 10, 2004 Anne Theresa Matthew, R.N., of Woodbridge, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 10, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 81. Born and raised in South Bend, Ind., to Steven and Anne (Bella) Nyikos, she was a graduate of South Bend Central High, a graduate of St Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, and served in the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She worked for over 20 years as an obstetrical nurse. 

An American Red Cross volunteer for over 55 years, she received an award for outstanding service from Elizabeth Dole in 1998 during the Red Cross Blood Services 50-year anniversary celebration. She was among the com-munity volunteers who raised funds to build Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, and served in its hospital auxiliary for decades. She was preceded in death by her parents, Steven and Anna Nyikos; two brothers, Robert E., killed in the Battle of the Bulge, and Richard J. (Joan) of Indianapolis, Ind.; sister-in-law, Betty (Horvath) Nyikos; and by brother-in-law, Eugene Janasiak of Michigan City.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon Matthew of Woodbridge; sisters, Katherine Janasiak of Michigan City and Teresa (Donald) Yates of South Bend, Ind.; brothers, Stephen (Julia) Nyikos of Broken Arrow, Okla., Joseph Nyikos of South Bend and Michael (Barbara) Nyikos of Elgin, Ill.; children, Victoria Lamb of Woodbridge, Gordon A. (Pat) Matthew of Charlottesville, Va., David (Kristen) Matthew of Dana Point, Calif.; grandchildren, Stephanie Din (mother, Alicia) of Seattle, Wash., Christopher Lamb of Manassas, Va., Nicholas Lamb of Woodbridge, Tyler Matthew and Genevieve Matthew of Charlottesville; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Anne knew no strangers, and was a friend to all. She cared for many moms and new babies, and was the Florence Nightingale of her time. She loved her family, Gordon most of all, and was proud of them always. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held in Woodbridge. Mountcastle Funeral Home, Dale City, Va., handled the arrangements. A celebration of Anne's life will be held at a later date in South Bend for family and friends.
