SOUTH BEND - Dorothy Mae Beghtel, 85, died at 9:20 a.m. Friday, June 22 in her residence following an illness. Mrs. Beghtel was born December 22, 1921, in Eau Claire, WI, to the late Syver A. and Millie G. (Thompson) Johnson and had lived in South Bend since 1929.

On September 10, 1944, in South Bend, as Dorothy M. Johnson, she married Bernard R. Beghtel, who preceded her in death August 1, 1971. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Marion (Al) Much and Ruth Busch; and a brother, Nels Johnson.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon A. (Donald) Clem of Culver, IN; two sons, Robert W. (Nancy) Beghtel of Walkerton and William A. Beghtel of North Liberty; six grandchildren, Cindy (Greg) Dressen, Holly (Michael) Kersten, Mike (Melissa) Beghtel, Bobbi Dion, Jennifer Keeton, and Jennifer (Jason) Howard; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marguerite Johnson of South Bend.

Dorothy retired in 1984 as a financial secretary for the South Bend Community School Corporation serving at the former Central High School and Dickinson Middle School. She had previously been employed at Western Union. She was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Martha Circle and Friendship Circle of the church. She was also a member of the Women's Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and was active with the Northern Indiana Food Bank, Hope Rescue Mission, and with the Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary for over 30 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 26 in Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Knauff officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 25 in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N.
