SOUTH BEND - Services for Eugene G. White, 69. of 1221 E. Irvington St., businessman and former captain of the Indiana University football team, who died at 8:35 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness, will be at 11 am. Thursday in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Entombment will be in Riverview Mausoleum. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
He captained the 1941 I.U. football team and played in the 1946 college football All-Star Game. Mr. White played with the Buffalo Bills of the old All-American conference until Injury forced his retirement. He was a graduate of I.U. and in 1985 was awarded the Clevenger Award, which is the highest honor given to any former I.U. athlete. In 1988, he was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, Indianapolis.
Mr. White was vice president of Edward J. White Inc., where he was employed for 43 years. He was born Aug. 3, 1919, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.
On June 12, 1943, in South Bend, he married Annette Ford, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, E.G. of Bloomington and Dr. Daniel E. of South Bend; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Gassensmith of South Bend and Evelyn Carrier of Avon, Fla.
Mr. White was a veteran of World War II and received two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star with three clusters and the Combat Infantry Badge.
He was former president of the Indiana University Alumni Association of St. Joseph County, member of the South Bend Country Club and former member of the board of directors, a member of South Bend Rotary Club and former member of the board of directors, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and a Paul Harris Fellow.
