Robert L. Pence, 82, of 150 Thompson Dr. SE, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in Mercy Hallmar Residential Care after a long illness. Memorial services: 10 a.m. Monday, St. Matthew Catholic Church, the Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Robert R. and wife Margie of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Cathy Pence and husband Dennis Murphy of Minneapolis, and Margie Bellinger a and husband Tom of Rochester, Minn.; six grandchildren, Leslie and Brian Pence and Hannah, Grace, Mark and Luke Bellinger; and two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Pence of Cedar Rapids and Helen Pence of Dunedin, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Alice and Mary; and two brothers, Ernest and John.
Bob was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Swayzee, Ind., the son of Raymond and Maze Kenney Pence. He attended Indiana University and graduated from the University of Iowa, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He married Mary Catherine Riley on Sept. 24, 1950, in Ottumwa. Bob was in sales at Prudential Insurance Co., retiring in 1987 after 35 years of service.
He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and served in the Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot with the 20th Air Force in the Pacific Theater. Memorial donations may be given to St. Matthew's Scholarship Fund, Mercy Home Health or to the charity of the donor's choice in Bob's name. The Pence Family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Hallmar for their loving care of Bob the past one and a half years.
