Mary "Bernice" (Hummer) Chapman

Mary "Bernice" Hummer Chapman, 89, died at 9:35 AM Tuesday, March 30, 1999, in Heritage Health Care. Born March 27, 1910, in South Bend, she had resided in Lafayette since 1951, moving from Goodland. She married Garold E. Chapman on April 9, 1931, in Elkhart; he preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1996.

Mrs. Chapman graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1927, and worked at J.C. Penney in the stockroom until she retired in 1975. She later worked as a receptionist at the Indiana Pythian Home until 1988. She was a member of Pythian Sisters Olympia Temple, and she enjoyed music and sewing.

Surviving are three daughters, Charlotte Weiand of South Bend, Janet Neubauer of Miami, FL, and Loretta Hobson of Lafayette; a brother, George Hummer of South Bend; 16 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Charles, a granddaughter, one brother and three sisters. Service April 2, Hippensteel Chapel, the Rev. Kenneth Kraft officiating; internment Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
