FRANCIS A. LIES

Francis A. Lies Aug. 26, 1919 - Nov. 10, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Francis A. Lies, 95, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 2:15 p.m. Monday, November 10, 2014, at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's in South Bend, IN. He was born on August 26, 1919, to the late John Paul and Katharine (Frisch) Lies in Naperville, IL, and had lived in South Bend since 1933, coming from Aurora, IL.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Marie Lies; two sisters, Isabel Cortier, Marilyn Gostola; three brothers, Paul William Lies, Ralph John Lies, Anthony E. Lies; a sister-in-law, Marge Lies; and a brother-in-law, George Cortier.

Francis graduated in 1937 from South Bend Central High School.

Mr. Lies retired in August of 1983 from Allied Signal Corporation, where he worked as a Contract Administrator from 1952 1983. On October 5, 1945, he married E. Fay Howell in the chapel at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX.

Francis is survived by his wife, Fay Lies of South Bend, IN; two daughters, Kathleen Ann (David) Wilkening of Yardley, PA, Marianne (John) Wantuch of South Bend, IN; three sons, James Michael (Mary Beth) Lies of Mishawaka, IN, Richard John (Barb) of San Diego, CA, Donald Scott (Barb) Lies of South Bend, IN; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles (Charlotte) Lies of South Bend, IN; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Ned) Kinzie of Haines City, FL, Esta Mae Lies of South Bend, IN; and one brother-in-law, Al Gostola of South Bend, IN.

Francis was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he served in Saipan as a 1st Lieutenant. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross award and the Air Medal with four clusters.

As a member of Holy Family Parish, he was a faithful Catholic and devoted to the Rosary. To the benefit of Pack 320 at Holy Family, he served two years as Cub Scout Master. He and his wife owned the Tastee Freez on Prairie Avenue in South Bend during the late 60's to early 70's. He was a charter member of the 73rd Bomb Wing Association; American Legion Post #284; Associate member of D.A.R.; the former Moose Lodge #58 of South Bend; and a member of the South Bend Genealogical Society. He was also a volunteer at the South Bend Public Library, the Military Honor Park, and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Francis and his wife loved hosting Christmas for the family. His sense of humor gained him many friends across his interests in golf, genealogy, travel, and volunteerism.

Visitation will be from 2:00 4:00 p.m. & 5:30 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2014, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2014, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 Mayflower Road, South Bend, IN, with Rev. Glenn J. Kohrman officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, where full Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #284.
