SOUTH BEND — Carl E. Verhoestra. 82, of East Ireland Road. died at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday in Meridian Nursing Center-Cardinal, after an illness. Mr. Verhoestra retired as a bookkeeper for Teeter Truck Sales and Stanley Enterprises. He was born Sept. 16, 1910, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.

He is survived by two sisters, Margaret Shirey of South Bend and Frieda Carpenter of Pennsylvania: and three brothers. Richard and Robert, both of South Bend, and Arthur of Fairhope. Ala.

He was a member of Holy Name Society of both St. Matthew Cathedral and St. Hedwig Catholic Church. He was also a member of M.R. Falcons Nest 4, American Legion Post 357 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1167, and was a veteran of World War II. 

Services will be at noon Friday in St. Matthew Cathedral. Entombment will be in Riverview Mausoleum. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Kaniewski & Sons Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or any charity.
