Margaret J (Alward) Cannon

Margaret Alward Cannon, wife of attorney Thomas A. Cannon, died Thursday morning in her home, 3015 W. North St., after several months illness.

Mrs. Cannon was born in South Bend, graduated from South Bend Central High School and attended Indiana University where she obtained a teaching license. Mrs. Cannon taught in the primary grades in St. Joseph County for six years. She was married to attorney Cannon in 1937, at which time she came to Muncie. She was play chairman in the children's ward in Ball Memorial Hospital for a number of years, as was a former member of the hospital's Ladies Auxiliary Board. She was a former board member of the Children's Matinee Musical. She was a charter member of the University Women's Club and was active in the Paul Revere Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She had been a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Muncie Bar Association for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Cannon was an avid golfer and for many years was tournament chairman of the Ladies 9-Hole Golf Association of the Delaware Country Club.

Survivors beside her husband include a daughter, Jane; a son, Thomas, Jr.; and three grandchildren; two brothers, Francis R. Alward, and John H. Alward; and two sisters, Miriam Fowler and Mary Burgess.

Mass of Christian burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Monday. Entombment will be in Elm Ridge Mausoleum. Calling hours in Meeks Mortuary will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. in the mortuary.
