SOUTH BEND — Simon Boorda, 77, of Blaine Avenue, died at 12:22 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 12, 1912, in Russia, he lived In this area most of his life.

On Jan. 28, 1961, in South Bend, he married Avanelle Carpenter, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Jerry E. of San Francisco; two stepdaughters, Nancy Horvath of Mishawaka and Suzanne Rickey of South Bend; a stepson, David E. Carpenter of Pasadena, Calif.; a granddaughter; seven step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Abe Boorda of Chicago and Nathan Boorda of La Vale, Md.

Mr. Boorda retired in 1974 after 32 years of service at Torrington Corp. He was active in union work, the women's rights movement, and South Bend Round Table. Forest G. Hay Fu-neral Home, 1201 S. Michigan St., is in charge of arrangements.
