Dr. S. Lynn Vance

SOUTH BEND — Dr. S. Lynn Vance, 81, of 1741 Wall St., died at 1:52 p.m. Tuesday, Apr 17, 1990, at Memorial Hospital. Dr. Vance practiced dentistry in South Bend for 53 years, retiring in 1987. He was born Dec. 16, 1908, in Bristol, Tenn., and lived in South Bend since 1916, coming from Tennessee.

On June 13, 1936, in Kokomo, he married Verna M. Martin. She survives, along with a daughter, Patricia Ann Beaver of Farmington Hills, Mich.; two sons. Michael L. of Dowagiac, and Gregory A. of Carmel, Ind.; six grand-children; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Maude E. Solbrig of South Bend.

A daughter, Doris Jeanne Thompson, died in 1979.

Dr. Vance was a graduate of Central High School and Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1932. lie was a former president of South Bend Dental Society and the North Central Dental Society, president of Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, a volunteer at Healthwin Hospital and Northern Indiana Children's Dispensary and was honored by North Central Dental Society Honor Dentists in 1989. He was a member of Elks Lodge 235 and South Bend Shoe and Slipper Dance Club, and was a former member of the (Odd Fellows. He was instrumental in the fluoridation of water in the South Bend area.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive. Cremation will follow. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
