SOUTH BEND - Mary E. Mezzei, 92, passed away at 8:55 am on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in her residence. Mary was born on May 30, 1918 in South Bend to Dennis and Mary (Balog) Horvath.

She was the owner of the former Mezzei Grocery Store. Mrs. Mezzei was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church and its St. Anne Society. She also was a member of the Daughters of Isabella #572 and the DFV German Club Ladies Auxiliary. Mary's hobbies included playing cards, enjoying time at Diamond Lake, especially with her family and grandchildren. She liked gardening and taking trips with all her friends.

On January 21, 1939 she married Steven J. Mezzei. He died on August 20, 1993. Mary was also preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Horvath and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Mezzei. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia (Alex) Szabo of Macy, IN and Denise (Larry) Rzepka of South Bend; two sons, Stephen Mezzei and Richard "Randy" (Antoinette) "Toni" Mezzei, both of South Bend; six grandchildren, Michelle Szabo, Ashley Rzepka, Karen Beckner, Michael Mezzei, Stephen Mezzei, and Justin Rzepka; and three great-grandchildren Brayden Mezzei, Ella Beckner, and Owen Beckner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010 in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, where a rosary will be recited at 3:00 pm by the St. Anne Society and Daughters of Isabella.
