SOUTH BEND — Ulysses E. "Ulie" Hesiben, 78. of 401 E. Corby Blvd., died at 8:15 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. Mr. Hesiben retired from Bendix Corp. as a foreman. He was born March 6, 1916. in Joppa. Ill., and lived in South Bend for 65 years, coming from Juppa.

On Sept. 5, 1936, in South Bend, he married Mary Elizabeth Mason. She survives, with three daughters, Laverna Hesiben Caldwell of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Rosalie Hesiben Boulware of Las Vegas. Nev.. and Unice Hesiben Pope of Marietta, Ga.: six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ornirue of South Bend.

He was a trustee and member of Grace AME Zion Church, a member of Hu-man Rights Commission for 12 years, United Auto Workers Local 9, where he was union steward and a representative for the auto council (or Region 3. He was a member of the former Algonquian Social and Civic Club, St. Peter's Lodge 31 F & AM. where he served as worshipful master and past master, and Wabash Consistory 77, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry where he served as commander and chief. In May 1973. he received his 33rd degree and became a grand inspector general of the United Supreme Council. He was the past first-lieutenant commander of the Indiana Council of Deliberation.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the church. Burial will be in Riverview Mausoleum. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Alford's Mortuary, where a masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the National Kidney Foundation.
