SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Goldie L. Ivory, 84, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Friday, December 17, 2010, in Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 19, 1926, to the union of Edna and Percy Carr in Chicago, Illinois.

Goldie was united in holy matrimony to Sam Ivory on August 6, 1947. To this union were born twin sons, Kenneth and Kevin on November 10, 1950, in South Bend, Indiana.

Goldie accepted the Lord as her Savior in 1987 and was a member of Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ where she was a member of the Mothers Board.

Mrs. Goldie Ivory attended South Bend Community Schools and graduated in 1944 from Central High School. She received degrees from the following universities: (1949) Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana-Bachelor of Science in Social Services; (1956) University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, Master's degree (first African American female to receive a Master's Degree from the University of Notre Dame; (1977) Indiana University, Indianapolis, Indiana, Master's degree of Social Work.

She was employed over the years in many ground-breaking positions and instrumental in building and helping minorities. She was employed at Elkhart Community Schools as director of Human Resources; Goshen College and Saint Mary's College as a professor; and as chief prosecutor for Juvenile Court and Probation Court.

In 1992, she received a license from the State of Indiana for Clinical and Social Work. Her many accomplishments from 1944 to 1993 include more than 20 awards and certificates. Most notably "Who's Who of American Women" and recognition from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for her work and commitment to establishing the South Bend Alumni Chapter.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving son, Kenneth (Hortense) Ivory of Indianapolis, Indiana; a granddaughter, Patrice (Deautre) Butler; five great-grandchildren, Kanasia, Hursey, Deautre Jr., LaDora and Danielle, all of South Bend; nieces, Cheryl (Willie) Taylor of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Angela Winston of South Bend; nephews, Dean Lovings, Craig Lovings and James (Mirella) Riley, also of South Bend; along with a host of other friends.

Goldie L. Ivory was preceded in death by her parents, Percy and Edna Carr; her husband, Sam Ivory; a son, Kevin Ivory; a brother, Elmer Lee Carr; and by a sister, Dorothy Lovings.
