Gertrude Kessel-Bartley

Gertrude "Trudy' Kessel-Bartley, 74, of Wooded Way, died at 12:02 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, in her home. Trudy is survived by her husband, John Eugene Bartley, who she married in Our Lady Chapel, University of Notre Dame, in December 1987. A prior marriage of 26 years to George Kessel ended with his death in 1979. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Casimir and Martha Jozwiak; and by a brother, Stanley Holewinski.

She is survived by her daughters, Laura (David) Baloun of Canton, Ohio, and Jane (Kevin) Luby of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Lindsay and Drew Baloun, Connor and Moira Luby; stepdaughters, Gina (Ed) Seeley of Orlando, Fla., and Susan (Paul) Haluda of South Bend, Ind.; a sister, Carolyn of South Bend; and by her brothers, Blase Jozwiak of South Bend and Erwin Holewinski of Bremen, Ind.

Trudy worked at the Studebaker Corporation in various secretarial capacities for 12 years. She later retired as the calendar coordinator at the Center of Continuing Education, University of Notre Dame, after 21 ½ years. Trudy was a member of the Christ Child Society. Trudy graduated from Central High School, South Bend, in 1944. Her classmates elected her football queen in her senior year and she presided with her court at the annual Central-Mishawaka football game, then held in Notre Dame stadium.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Dame. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637
