Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Eunice Parsons and Miriam Tillery; and by her brother, Dr. Jim Toothaker, D.D.S.

Lettie graduated from South Bend Central High School, and until she was married was a nursing assistant to Dr. Milo Miller. In that capacity, one of her tasks was to do daily pollen counts for the county and report her results to the local news media.

Lettie and her husband were longtime members of Community Baptist Church of South Bend where she served the Lord as a Sunday school assistant, choir member, singer, and missionary society member. She was known for her kindness to all she met and was considered a prayer warrior, spending much time petitioning for the many who she knew and loved. Always concerned about others, she reached out to her neighbors who lived around her. She had the reputation for having a green thumb, and always had many lovely plants in her home.
