Albin A. "Al Kit" Kitkowski, 88, of Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Poland Street, South Bend, passed away at 8:40 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2003. Mr. Kitkowski was born on December 19, 1914, in South Bend to Franciszeke and Valeria (Chimelewski) Kitkowski. He retired in 1979 from the Torrington Corporation, where he was employed as a skilled tool grinder for 13 years. He had also been previously employed with the Studebaker Corporation for 33 years.

On April 15, 1944, in St. Casimir Church, he married Dorothy M. Andrysiak, who passed away on October 14, 1989.

Surviving are his children, Michele (Gary) Oleson of Albuquerque, NM, Suzanne (Steve) Wenzel of Elkhart, IN, Michael (Judith) Kitkowski of Osceola, IN, Paul (Kathy) Kitkowski of Edwardsburg, MI, and John C. Kit of Edwardsburg, MI; his nine grand-children, Kristina (Larry) Hursh, Ryan (Melissa) Kitkowski, Lori Kitkowski, Alan Wenzel, Brandon Kitkowski, Andrew LaFree, Katie LaFree, Meghan Oleson and Ben Oleson; his three great-grandchil-dren, Hanna Kitkowski, Dillion Hursh and Gabriel Kitkowski; his sister, Loretta Wojciechowski of South Bend, IN; and his brother, Frank (Betty) Kitkowski of South Bend, IN.

Preceding him in death was his sister, Helen Piekarski, and his brother, Stanley Kitkowski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2003, in St. Casimir Church. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, September 7, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a combined St. Casimir Parish and St. Casimir Senior Citizen Club rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m.

Mr. Kitkowski was a member of St. Casimir Parish, Usher's Club and Senior Citizen Club. He was a 1933 graduate of South Bend Central High School where he was a member of the marching band. He was also a member of the South Bend Federation of Musicians for over 50 years. Mr. Kitkowski played saxophone and clarinet with Eddie Knight and many other musicians including Jack Ruben, Wayne Stutzman, Ralph Norris, Dick Derf, Al Niedbalski, Myron Wald and Jimmy Dale. In the 1950s, he formed the Frankie Kit Orchestra with his brother Frank, and played many local functions.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir Church.
