SOUTH BEND - Lucille M. Hickey, 83, of the Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of the Fairington Apartments and Napoleon Boulevard, went to heaven to be reunited with her husband Louis and her son Jimmy at 8:45 p.m. on Mon-day, Sept. 14, at St. Joseph Medical Center. She was a lifetime resident of South Bend, Ind.

Lucille was born on June 11, 1915, in South Bend, to Arthur and Mary (Mandler) Eulitz, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 12, 1939, as Lucille Eulitz, she married her high school sweetheart, Louis J. Hickey, Sr., who preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1951. Lucille was also preceded in death by a son, James M. Hickey in 1952; a sister, Helen Petretic; and by a brother, Arthur Eulitz.

Lucille worked hard to raise and educate her children. She is survived by three daughters, Patricia L. Szabo and Barbara M. (Thomas) Kostielney, both of South Bend, and Joanne E. (David) Coyle of Granger, Ind.; a son, Louis J. (Linda Janczak) Hickey of Granger; 11 grandchildren, Steven (Mary) Szabo, Andrew (Joy) Kostielney, Susan Kostielney, Maureen (Troy) Terry, Brian Coyle, James (Tracy) Hickey, Christopher (Tuesday) Hickey of South Bend, Shawn Hickey of Mishawaka, Ind., Louis (Michelle) Hickey, III, of Granger, David (Angie) Coyle of Valparaiso, Ind., and Michael (Kandi) Coyle of Bloomington, Ind.; nine great-grandchildren, Thomas, Abigail and Madelyn Kostielney, Isaac Terry and Quynn Hickey of South Bend, Kaitlyn and Joseph Hickey of Granger, and Makayla and Malorie Coyle of Valparaiso; and by a sister, Marie Kelley of Centerville, Ohio.

Lucille graduated from St. Joseph South Bend Elementary School and the former South Bend Central High School. She also attended the former Holy Cross School of Nursing.

Lucille was a former employee of the South Bend City Works and retired from the St. Joseph County Treasurer's Office. She was active in city and county politics. She was a 4th district precinct committee woman, and was a delegate to the Indiana State Convention. She was a former president of the St. Joseph Medical Center's hospital auxiliary. She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the PTA. While living at the Fairington Apartments, she was a volunteer for the Real Services daily lunch program.

Lucille brought many years of happiness to her children and grandchildren and was always there for them, even if it was only to lend an ear. She spent many days teaching her grandchildren to play cards, and trying to beat them at Yatzee. She loved being with her family, either at their homes or at her grandchildren's sporting events. She loved to work crossword puzzles and was an avid Cubs and Notre Dame fan.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend, with Rev. William A. Wack, C.S.C., officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary will be said at 5 p.m.
