James Henry Pankow

SOUTH BEND — James Henry Pankow, an attorney for 42 years in the South Bend firm of Jones, Obenchain, Johnson, Ford and Pankow, died December 27, 2006, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center as a result of respiratory problems. He was born to Bess Holt Pankow and Charles John Pankow in Brooklyn, New York.
He graduated from South Bend Central High School and the V12 at Purdue University receiving a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1949.He received his doctor of jurisprudence from Indiana University in 1950 where he was the editor of the Indiana Law Journal from 1949 -1950. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S.Navy during the Korean War, 1951-1952, and was assistant U.S.attorney in Hammond, Ind.and South Bend prior to taking his position at the law firm in 1954.
He married Margaret Davis in 1952, who survives with their six children, Laura Jean Pankow, Scott David Pankow and his wife, Rebecca Richardson, James Stephen Pankow, Mark William Pankow, John Robert Pankow and Charles Christopher Pankow. His grandchildren, Erika, Zachary and Alex, also survive him. His sister, Mary Brothers survives.
His brother, Charles John Pankow, preceded him in death.
He was a part of community activities including service on the board of the Family and Children’s Center, serving as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana for Bishops Walter Klein, William C.R.Sheridan and Frances Gray and several years of service on the vestry at the Episcopal Cathedral of St.James.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m.Tuesday, January 2nd in the Episcopal Cathedral of St.James, 117 N.Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN 46601. Visitation will be held from 2 until 6 p.m.today, December 31st, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N.William St., South Bend, IN.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cathedral of St.James 117 N.Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, Indiana, 46601.Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at welshfh@yahoo.com
