Fred E. Labis
Sept. 29, 1924 – July 30, 2006
Fred E. Labis, 81, a lifelong resident of the South Bend/Mishawaka area, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2006, at 3:15 a.m.in Healthwin Special Care Facility, South Bend. Fred was born on September 29, 1924, to the late Joseph Labis and Stella (Rybacki) Labis.
On January 19, 1945, he married Helen (Snider), who preceded him in death on December 9, 1989. Mr.Labis is survived by four children, Judy (Terry) Bell of Baton Rouge, La., Janet (Jerry) Matthys of South Bend, Kim (Nancy) Labis of Bridgman, MI, and Joseph (Renee) Labis of Winter Haven, Fla.;a sister, Elaine (Patrick) Moritz of South Bend;eight grandchildren, Brian Gall, Heather (Bell) Landry, Chad Bell, Collette Labis, Jami (Labis) Tate, Jimmy Labis, Jason Labis, Jimmy Labis and Andrea Labis.He has seven great- grandchildren.
Fred graduated from South Bend Central High School before joining the military during WWII.He served his time with the Marines in the South Pacific where he participated in five island campaigns, including Saipan.After the war he owned and operated Labis’ Food Market for 16 years.He then became a salesman for Lawson Products until he retired at 67.He was an avid fisherman his entire life, and enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends.He spent his final years residing at the Waterford at Edison Lakes retirement community.
A graveside service will take place today, August 4, 2006, at 10 a.m.at St.Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.The ST.JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S.Mayflower Road, is assisting the family with arrangements. Contributions in memory of Fred Labis may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
