SOUTH BEND — Barney Zoss, 83, longtime area baseball and soft-ball umpire and a member of the Indiana Base ball Hall of Fame since 1991, died at 6:55 p.m. Thursday at Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Zoss retired in 1979 from the South Bend Street Department. He worked for Royal Rubber Co. from 1958 to 1968 and was a salesman for Electrolux from 1948 to 1958. He was born March 25, 1912, in South Bend. On Jan. 17, 1937, in South Bend, he married Minnie Franklin. She died Aug. 26, 1992. 

He is survived by two daughters, Estelle A. Cook of San Marcos, Calif., and Sandra Barton of Niles; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rose Linn of Michigan City; and a sister-in-law, Millie Zoss of South Bend.

He was a member of Temple Beth-El, South Bend Eagles, and B'nai B'rith. He received the Russ Oliver Award in 1981. In 1991, Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium honored him by naming the umpires' room the Barney Zoss Umpires Room.

Services will be at noon Sunday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive. Burial will be in Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth-El. .
