Rev. Stephen Gubi

Rev. Stephen Gubi, 89, of U.S. 12, Niles, Mich., passed away after a lengthy illness on Saturday, May 27, at 7:45 a.m. in Silverbrook Manor, Niles. Mr. Gubi was born on Dec. 21, 1910 in South Bend, Ind., as the son of the late Frank and Victoria (Bokor) Gubi. On March 3, 1940 in Pershing, Ind., he married the former Virginia Grace Hunt, who preceded him in death on April 5, 1991. Rev. Gubi was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irma Brenneman and Caroline Steenbeke.
Rev. Gubi is survived by a daughter, Priscilla M. "Pat" Gubi of Bourbon, Ind.; a sister, Elvira (Leslie) Nemeth of South Bend; three brothers, Arnold (Jane) Gubi of Mishawaka, Ind., David (Elizabeth) Gubi of South Bend and Julius (Margaret) Gubi of Florida; along with many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Rev. Gubi graduated from Central High School in 1932 and North Central College Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1936. He also received a degree in 1939 from Indiana Central College, now the University of Indianapolis. Rev. Gubi served the following United Methodist churches: Pershing (1936-1939), First Kokomo, (1939-1947), Mishawaka Coalbush (1947-1948), Rochester Trinity (1948-1953), South Bend Grace (1953-1959), San Pierre (1959-1960), Elkhart Albright (1960-1962), Atwood Ct. (1962-1966), Huntington Bethel (1966-1968), and Lakeview (1969-1987).
Rev. Gubi was also known as Stephen the Magician and entertained many people and children over the years.
Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30. in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. Eighth St., Mishawaka. Funeral services will be al 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, in the funeral home, with Rev. John Hyrnk officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Contributions in Rev. Gubi's memory may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
