Elaine E. (Ruppert) Toppel

SOUTH BEND, IN - Elaine E. Toppel age 90 of South Bend, Indiana passed away Monday, December 25, 2017 at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home in LaGrange, Indiana. She was born October 20, 1927 in South Bend, Indiana daughter of the late Fredrick and Hatti (Herman) Ruppert. Mrs. Toppel resided most of her life in South Bend and summered at Fish Lake in Sturgis from the time she was a young lady.

On August 04 1946 she married Robert E. Toppel in Centreville, Michigan. He died October 10, 2015.

Mrs. Toppel had been employed as an executive secretary to the City of South Bend Controller office. She also worked with the South Bend Housing Authority and the Indiana Toll Road. She enjoyed dancing and traveling with her husband to watch him perform in his bands.

She is survived by one daughter: Sandy Barnet; one son: Robert (Kathleen) Toppel, Jr. both of Sturgis, Michigan; grandchildren: David (Erika) Barnet of Colorado and Carrie (David) Smalley of South Bend, Indiana; three great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law: David F. Barnet, II and two sisters: Eleanor Milliken and Helen Veith.

In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. Private services and burial of the ashes will take place at the Highland Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana. The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331 is entrusted with the arrangements.
