Hugh David Hack
August 6, 1924 ~ November 29, 2023 (age 99)
Hugh David Hack “David” died peacefully in his home at 99 years old. He was a lifelong resident of South Bend, living on Leland Ave since 1939.
The family is very grateful to David's devoted caregiver, Dee Thompson, who made it possible for the family to fulfill David's wish to pass away gently in the home he loved.
David was preceded in death by infant sister, Margaret, sister, Catherine Duncan and his parents, Alden and Adah Hack.
Surviving are sister, Mary Helen Bautzmann, nieces, Cynthia Schwertz, Patricia Duncan and Julianne Duncan. Also surviving are great-nieces, Rosemary Dewers, Mary Catherine Odabachian, Isabella Dewers and nephews, Clifton Dewers and Ben Holden, as well as great-great-nephew, Tucker Elahan. Also surviving is his dear friend, John Bowlby.
David attended Central High School. He studied commercial refrigeration at Minneapolis Institute of Technology, returning to South Bend to establish the successful business Hack's Refrigeration Service. He was a familiar and well-loved face in many grocery stores and restaurants in the area. He later merged with A 1 Refrigeration, retiring in his mid-seventies.
Family was of utmost importance to David. His passing leaves many fond memories of trips taken, and adventures had with Uncle David. He was a son, brother, uncle and friend of the greatest quality. We'll miss you Uncle David and carry you always in our hearts.
David will be interred with his parents at Highland Cemetery. There will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to 333 N. Main St., South Bend, IN 46601.
