Joseph C. Rhoades, 79, of 0050 W. County Road 100 South, LaGrange, Ind., died of natural causes at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in LaGrange Community Hospital. He was born on Oct. 30, 1922, in Mendon, Ohio, to Earl M. and Goldie (Bisel) Rhoades. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Rhoades in 1993; two brothers, Richard and Shirley Rhoades; and by a sister, Vivian Markley.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the 1881st Aviation Engineers Battalion during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 215 in LaGrange, Ind., past member of the Rotary Club in LaGrange, and was active in the Boy Scouts for 36 years. He retired from AT&T as a supervisor in 1977 after 36 years of service, and was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in LaGrange.

On June 14, 1947, in South Bend, Ind., he married Betty E. Rose, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Steve Hickey of LaGrange; a son and daughter-in-law, Dad and Susan Rhoades of Littleton, Colo.; three brothers, Daniel D. Rhoades of Pomona, Calif., Charles L. Rhoades of South Bend and Jack A. Rhoades of Lexington, Ky.; 13 grandchil-dren, Dawn Rhoades, James Long, Jerrod Rhoades, Nathan Rhoades, Phillip Rhoades, Jacquline Rhoades, Jon Hickey, Jett Hickey and Bambi Sparkman, Chad Hickey, Mike and April Burger, and Steve Hickey Jr: and by five great-grandchildren, Shelby Long, Damian Long, Cory Rhoades, Max Burger and Autumn Long.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m on Saturday, Nov. 24. in the Carney-Frost Funeral Home. LaGrange, with Rev. Steven Flynn officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church.
