James Paul Gooley

James Paul Gooley CHARLOTTE - James Paul Gooley, age 91, of 1210 Paddock Circle, Charlotte, died December 5, 2014. He was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, on October 1, 1923, to Gertrude Baumgartner and Paul Edgar Gooley. He joined the Naval ROTC at the University of Notre Dame, and served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Jim graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1945 with a degree in chemical engineering.

He married Susannah Shortman, who survives, on April 23, 1949.

After moving with his family to Charlotte in 1964, he was employed with Uniroyal, and later Globe Manufacturing in Gastonia as a quality control manager. He has been a faithful member of St. Ann Catholic Church for 50 years. After his retirement, he enjoyed volunteering with Friendship Trays.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by three children, Phillip Gooley, of Huntersville, Paula Gooley Lackey, of Waxhaw, and Ellen Gooley Hester and husband Patrick, of Hurdle Mills. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Emily Susannah Hester and Erin Hester Fleig and husband Cameron, of Raleigh, and Ryan James Hester, of Hurdle Mills.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 9, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at the home at 1210 Paddock Circle, Charlotte. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 3635 Park Road, Charlotte, with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Ann Catholic Church, 3635 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209. T.H.
