SOUTH BEND - Louis Smanda, Jr., 73, of Osceola, Ind., (formerly of Crestwood Blvd. in South Bend) died at 4:19 p.m. Tuesday July 23, in the St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend, Ind.

Mr. Smanda was born on Aug. 19, 1922, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.

On April 14, 1945, in South Bend, he married Ruth M. O'Neill, who preceded him in death on May 5, 1992. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, with whom he lived, Theresa (Teri) and Clarence Stevenson of Osceola, Ind.; two grandsons, Sean L. Stuart, who is stationed with the United States Air Force in Germany, and Shane M. Stuart of Osceola, Ind.; and his brother, Carl J. Smanda of South Bend.

Mr. Smanda was a Tool & Die Designer who was employed by the former Studebaker Corporation, Bendix Corporation and Witt Engineering. He retired from Dodge Reliance Company in Mishawaka after 16 years of service as a Tool & Die Designer. Mr. Smanda was a member of Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553, Council of Catholic Men of South Bend-Fort Wayne Diocese, the Holy Name Society, Serra Club and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
