GENEVIEVE (TALLEY) SCOTT

SOUTH BEND - Genevieve Scott, born August 6, 1921, in South Bend, Indiana, to Vernon Talley and Sylvia Koonce Talley, was the third of three children.

She was a lifelong resident and graduated from Central High School, class of 1940. After high school, she worked as an elevator operator for Penney's.

On June 26, 1948, she was wed to James Scott in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Cindy.

After settling her children in school, Genevieve became a five-corner crossing guard for the South Bend Police Department for 28 years. She was also known for her catering business in the community, and was featured in an article with the South Bend Tribune. On Friday, May 6, 2011, The Lord called Genevieve to her final resting place after an extended illness. She was an active member of First AME Zion Church where she served as President of the Missionary Supply Department for many years, serving the sick and shut-ins in the church community.

She leaves to mourn her passing two loving daughters, Sylvia Kay (Werner) Haynes of Markham, IL, Toni (Larry) Johnson, a granddaughter, Jayme Barros, a great-granddaughter, Jayla, all of South Bend, IN.

Her husband of 63 years, James Scott, preceded her in death as well as her parents, brother David, and sister, Kathryn. Another special daughter, Elaine Linnear of California, preceded her in death. A special daughter, Carol D. Washington, of South Bend, IN, and a grandson, Scott (Eileen) Anderson of Sacramento, California, also survive to cherish her memory along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Genevieve will forever be missed, loved and cherished by those who were blessed to know her.

The funeral service for Mrs. Scott is Thursday, May 12, at noon, with visitation one hour before the service in Cobb Funeral Home, 3525 S. Michigan St. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
