Robert R. Stewart, Jr. of Mesa. Arizona passed away on January 21. 2004. Mr. Stew art was born on Au-gust 21, 1920, to Dr. Robert R. and Madeline L. Stewart of South Bend. Indiana. Upon graduating from South Bend Central High School he attended Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan where he met his future wife Nancye B. Skeffington. They were married December 14, 1943, just after he completed basic training with the U.S. Marine Corps.

After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 1946, he began a 28-year career with General Motors Corporation at the Milford Proving Ground. Mr. Stewart went to work for Pontiac after completing his BA in Economics in 1947. In 1954 he returned to work at the Milford Proving Ground. In May of 1959 he transferred to the Desert Proving Ground in Mesa as Personnel Supervisor and was later promoted to Personnel Administrator.

In 1975 he retired from General Motors. He continued applying his vast knowledge of employment and training as a personnel consultant. Mr. Stewart was a member of the Arizona Section of the Society of Auto-motive Engineers, East Valley Personnel Management Association, Arizona and New Mexico Professional Services Committee, a part of Western College Placement Association, and the Benevolent Paternal Order of Elks.

His civic activities included the Arizona Business-Industry-Education Council, Mesa Chamber of Commerce. Mesa YMCA. City of Mesa Planning and Zoning Board, and Crime Prevention Advisory Board. He was also a volunteer with the Mesa Po-lice Department and member of the Mesa Fraternal Order of Police, both of which he was very proud. Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Nancye B. Stewart.

He is survived by sons Robert (Susan) of Mesa and Charles (Lenora) of Michigan, daughter Andrea (Dean Turner) of Gilbert, granddaughter Jennifer (Jeffrey Hoenshell) of California, grandson Kevin of Mesa, step grandsons Aaron and David Turner of California, and several cousins in Illinois.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2004 at Melcher’s Chapel of the Roses, 43 S. Stapley in Mesa. In lieu of flowers, the pull requests contributions in Robert’s name to the Fraternal Order of Police Mesa Lodge #9, P.O. Box 999, Mesa, 5211-0999 or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.
