MARY A. (HUSBAND) WATKINS

Mary A. Watkins Oct. 21, 1936 - Oct. 8, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Mary A. Watkins, 77, of South Bend, IN, went home to be with the Lord at 5:22 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, after a period of illness. She was surrounded by family and loved ones during the days and times leading up to her passing. Sister Mary Watkins was born on October 21, 1936, in Sunflower, Mississippi, to the union of Wayman and Estella (Plump) Husband, who both preceded her in death.

At the age of 6, Mary's family moved to South Bend, IN, where Mary graduated from South Bend Central High School.

She was united in holy matrimony to William Watkins on July 17, 1955. To that union two children were born, one son, Douglas Watkins, and one daughter, Denice Watkins. After marriage, Mary and her husband relocated to Muskegon, MI. Mary was employed by Sappi Fine Paper Company in Muskegon where she retired after 20 years of service. Sixteen years ago Mary moved back to South Bend from Muskegon and renewed her membership at Christ Temple Church of God in Christ. Mary was a faithful servant of the Lord. Never one to complain about the challenges of life, she walked with God and communed with him daily. She held weekly bible study meetings in her home where family and friends would often gather. She was an avid reader with the bible being her favorite book to read. Mary also enjoyed planting flowers, fishing, and taking care of animals. Her most beloved pet was "Kitty."

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two children.

Survivors left to cherish her memory include five sisters, Elizabeth Howell and Ruth Martin of South Bend, IN, Victoria Husband of Kansas City, KS, Betty Kingsberry of Pomona, CA, and Barbara Tucker of Phoenix, AZ; four brothers: George (Alberta) Husband of Summerfield, Florida. James (Rosalind) Husband and Wayman (Gail) Husband of South Bend, IN, Rex (Angela) Husband of Detroit, MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Sister Mary will be missed by all of the family and friends who dearly loved her.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph Medical Center as well as the Center for Hospice Care for their thoughtful and dedicated services.

Services for Mary A. Watkins will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Christ Temple, 1214 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and funeral service at 12 noon.
