Sharon Louise (Atherton) Wallis
April 15, 1937 ~ February 16, 2025
Sharon Louise (Atherton) Wallis, 87, passed from this life into the throne room of heaven on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at Wellbrooke of South Bend nursing facility. She loved her family and went the way she would have wanted, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Born in South Bend, Indiana on April 15, 1937, and was a life-long resident. Sharon graduated from Central High School in 1955. On June 25, 1955, she married the love of her life Gerald R. (Jerry) Wallis. Later in life, she attended IVY Tech to become a certified medical assistant and retired after working for Dr John Byler for over 20 years.
Together Sharon and Jerry determined, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). And they followed that motto throughout their lives. Sharon sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School. She was a leader in the Ladies Auxiliary, coordinating the food for youth banquets every year and the making and sales of tons of peanut brittle. Later, she had the unofficial title of church grandma where she loved on countless teens and chaperoned numerous youth and Christian School trips. She freely showed love (and shared her opinion), making people feel like a member of her family.
Sharon is survived by a daughter Jolene A. (John) Nash, of Fort Wayne, IN. and sons Gerald R. (Jerry, wife Patti) Wallis II of South Bend, IN, of South Bend, IN, Jeffrey A. (Patricia) Wallis of South Bend, IN, Joel M. (Lora) Wallis of Osceola, IN. Grandchildren Amanda Wallis, Beth Alt, John Nash III, Marcus Wallis, Jerrod Nash, Andrew Wallis, Jordan Nash, Ashley Wallis, Sarah Thompson, Jennifer Nash, and Michael Wallis, and 13 great-grandchildren, 2 step great-grandchildren, and 2 on the way. Brothers LeRoy (Loretta) Atherton of LaPorte, IN, Billy (Toni) Atherton of South Bend, IN, and Thomas (Sue) Atherton of Osceola, IN. Sharon was preceded in death by her spouse Gerald R., parents Leroy W. and Josephine L. (Simon) Atherton, sister Kathleen Atherton Colpitts, and grandsons Jeffrey Wallis and Christopher Wallis.
Sharon and Jerry loved their family and church. They enjoyed traveled together all over the US and Europe. Later Sharon traveled with her children and grandchildren to Great Britian, Italy, China, and to many states including Alaska. Sharon enjoyed various forms of needle arts including knitting, crochet, embroidery, sewing, and especially quilting. Her family is enjoying the many beautiful quilts she made.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Christ Temple Apostolic Impact Center, 51900 Mayflower Rd, South Bend, IN 46628. Viewing from 10:00-1200, funeral at 1200. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Bend, IN.
