Glenn H Woods

Glenn H. Woods

WOODS, Glenn H., age 84, died June 17, 2015. – LOVING HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER AND FRIEND Glenn was born in South Bend, Indiana the fourth child of a house painter and a housewife. His beginnings were indeed humble. By all accounts Glenn was a very happy and curious boy and enjoyed all of the sorts of activities that imaginative minds were required to create before television became the centerpiece of our culture. In 1942, at the age of 11 Glenn's life was to change forever. His father suffered a massive heart attack and passed away that same day. So, at the ripe old age of 11 and with all of his siblings grown and gone (two fighting in WWII), Glenn and his mother had to go to work to support their little family and he never stopped working until January of this year.

Glenn went on to graduate from South Bend Central High School in 1949 where he met Marilyn Stettauer, who was to become his wife and partner for the rest of her life. On January 30, 1951 Marilyn and Glenn were married.

Also in 1951 Glenn received an "invitation" from Uncle Sam to join his Army. After completing Basic Training, Glenn was given a two week leave so he could be there for the birth of his son. On December 31st 1951 Glenn was informed that the Army could wait no longer and he had to leave for Korea that night. The next morning on January 1st his son Michael was born. He was not to see his son for nearly two years as he fought in the Korean War. He attained the rank of Staff Sargent and was always very proud to have served his country!

When Glenn returned from the war he entered what was to be a very successful 50 year career in sales and sales management. In 1956 he moved the family to Michigan which is where they stayed with the exception of a brief intermission for a four year career enhancer in Erie, Pennsylvania. He lived primarily in Birmingham and Troy. In 1976 Glenn began his last career move as the Sales Director for Parker Hannifin Automotive where he successfully grew the business until his retirement in 2003. Throughout his career Glenn spent his "spare time", weekends and evenings, selling real estate which was something he always loved!

On December 30th of 2005 Glenn lost the love of his life, Marilyn, to cancer. They had a wonderful life together and did a great job of keeping many Detroit area fine dining establishments in business. Glenn was very lonely for at least six months until a chance encounter on a blind date with a former neighbor. Glenn met Connie and he was smitten…Apparently so was she.

On June 16th of 2007 Glenn and Connie were married. Although their time together was short (yesterday was their 8th Anniversary) they packed a lot of excitement into that time, traveling the world together and truly enjoying each other! Glenn was a long time member of the Detroit Golf Club where he was known for having one of the worst golf swings most had ever seen. That never stopped Glenn from spending time with clients, family and friends enjoying a golf course that he truly loved. He and his son Mike always enjoyed watching all of the Major golf tournaments together. Glenn was always a very giving man and had many longtime friends. He spent the rest of his life following his retirement doing volunteer work for charitable organizations such as Lighthouse Path, The Red Cross and St. Vincent De Paul. Glenn maintained his enjoyment of a great meal always accompanied by a glass (or two, or maybe more?) of good wine until his recent illness made that difficult.

Glenn loved his family. He was a devoted husband to his late wife Marilyn and equally devoted to his current wife Connie. He was an exemplary father to his son Michael (Tracy) and very loving grandfather to their daughter, Elizabeth. Glenn was a loving brother to Lewis Woods and his wife Betty. He was also a great uncle to his nephews William, Peter and Chris Bonde and his nieces the former Susan and Linda Woods.

Family will receive friends Friday 4:00-8:00pm at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward (btwn 13-14 Mile), Royal Oak. Funeral Mass Saturday 10:00am at St. Thomas More Church, 4580 Adams(btwn Wattles Rd. & Long Lake Rd.), Troy 48098. Visitation at church begins at 9:30am. In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial tributes to St. Vincent de Paul Society or Lighthouse of Oakland County.
