Shirley C. (Weissfuss) Engel

Shirley C. Engel, 93, residing in South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2023. She was born on January 21, 1930 to the late Richard H. and Selma (Belke) Weissfuss in Chicago, Illinois. On August 5, 1950 in South Bend, she was united in marriage to Robert J. Engel. They were married for 66 years before his passing. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Maureen Ann Walorski, and a brother, Richard Weissfuss.

Shirley is survived by one daughter, Kathleen J. Engel of South Bend; two granddaughters, Lisa Walorski of Mishawaka and Julie (Robert) Visser of Florida; three great-granddaughters; and one son-in-law, Gary Walorski of South Bend.

She was a member of the Naples, Florida Shell Club where she received several ribbons for her entries in their annual shows. She was an artist who enjoyed her shell crafts, glass painting, and sewing.

Shirley was a graduate of Central High School, South Bend. She went on to work as a secretary for Culligan Water Conditioning for 16 years. Along with her husband, she taught ballroom dancing for the South Bend Recreation Department for over 25 years. After retiring in 1995, she and her husband continued to teach ballroom dancing for the Bonita Springs, Florida Recreation Department.

A memorial service for Shirley will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2023 2:00 pm at Palmer Funeral Home - River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, IN 46615. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior. A graveside service will follow at Highland Cemetery in South Bend.
