SOUTH BEND - E. Dolores McDonald, 81, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 7:13 a.m. Sunday, November 18, 2012, at Kindred Hospital of Northern Indiana in Mishawaka. She was born on July 9, 1931, to the late Raymond and Elizabeth (Hodosy) Thompson in South Bend, Indiana, and was a lifelong resident. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Doretta L. Burkhart on May 2, 2010; and a grandson, Richard Dale Parker Jr. in 2007.

Dolores graduated in 1949 from South Bend Central High School and attended St. Mary's College.

Mrs. McDonald worked as a tax consultant for H&R Block in South Bend for 20 years until 2010. Prior to that, she worked at the Studebaker Administration Building until she began raising a family and got involved with volunteering.

On November 12, 1949, as E. Dolores Thompson, she married John M. McDonald at Holy Cross Catholic Church in South Bend.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, John M. McDonald of South Bend, Indiana; two daughters, Kathy J. (James) Nova of LaPorte, Indiana, and Karen L. McDonald (Ernie Manges) of South Bend, Indiana; one son, John R. McDonald of New Carlisle, Indiana; five grandchildren, John "Willie" Hersom Jr., Daniel Hersom, Krystal Parker, Tiffany Parker and Jeremiah McDonald; and eight great-grandchildren, Reshai and Travis Hersom, Alexis and Emma Hersom, Shelby Parker, Devin and Kirsten Szalay, and Dominic DeKerr.

Dolores was a volunteer for the College Football Hall of Fame, Sunburst, and American Red Cross, where she was a Water Safety Instructor, and taught CPR and First Aid. She received a Community Service Award from St. Joseph County and also a 20-year Notre Dame Blanket for her First Aid Services. Dolores was also a Girl Scout leader for many years. She loved gambling and visiting Las Vegas with her friends, and playing cards with her Card Club.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2012, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2012, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, Indiana, with Rev. Daryl Rybicki officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, St. Joseph County Chapter, 3220 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46615.
