SOUTH BEND - Roger L. Kring, 81, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, in Fort Myers, Florida. He was born on April 10, 1931, to the late Theodore and Fern (Hathaway) Kring in Pierceton, IN, and was a lifelong South Bend area resident.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Allen Kring, and a grandson, Allen Bratton.

Roger graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1949, where he played on the state championship football team. He also played on the baseball team from 1947 - 1949, where he was a member of the state championship team in 1948 and 1949.

Mr. Kring retired in 1991 from AEP, where he worked as a Supervisor and Lineman for 42 years.

On October 28, 1950, he married Lois J. Grubbs, who preceded him in death on June 8, 2006. He then married Judy Bratton on June 29, 2007.

Roger is survived by his loving wife, Judy Kring of South Bend, Indiana; two daughters, Karen (Dick) Swisher of South Bend, Indiana, & Sandra (Robert) Kile of Union, Kentucky; one son, Rick (Vickie) Kring of South Bend, Indiana; stepson, Kenny Bratton of South Bend, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Kelly Pearson, Brianne Dorn, Ryan (Amy) Kring, Stacy Kile, Travis Kring, Adam Swisher, Lindsay Kring and Jonathan Bratton; six great-grandchildren, Lilly and Audrey Pearson, Cameron and Claire Dorn, and Rylan and Lucy Kring; one sister, Patsy Claeys of Elkhart, Indiana; and his fishing buddy, Trevor Warrell of South Bend, Indiana.

Mr. Kring was a lifetime member of Northwest United Methodist Church in South Bend, IN. Roger loved to watch all sports, and was an avid golfer and fisherman. He played fast pitch softball for nine years and also bowled for many years. Roger was a huge Notre Dame, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago White Sox fan. Roger was known as the "Vegetable Man" in his neighborhood because of the wonderful vegetables he grew and sold. He enjoyed feeding birds and squirrels.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today, November 18, 2012, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2012, at Northwest United Methodist Church, with Pastor Vickie Van Nevel officiating. The church is located at 21855 Brick Road, South Bend, Indiana 46628. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
