Elizabeth A. (Horan) McFadden

Elizabeth A. McFadden, nee’ Horan, died at home in Bloomington of natural causes on January 24, 2024. Liz, as she was known, spent most of her life in South Bend before relocating a few years ago to be near her daughter Erin, her daughter’s partner, Scott, and grandson Henry.

Liz was born September 27, 1952, in Huntsville, Alabama, to Captain John J. Horan and Shirley W. Horan. She spent a memorable part of her early life in Austria at one of her father’s postings. The family came to South Bend when Liz’s father became an instructor for the Notre Dame ROTC program.

Liz attended Madison Grade School and was in the final graduating class from South Bend Central. She was a terrific tennis player and was also captain of the Central Bears cheerleading squad. She was proud of being a Central Bear. She attended Indiana University before beginning a teaching career at Holy Family Grade school, followed by terms at Navarre and Brown Middle School. Following teaching, Liz enjoyed a career in sales. She was a devoted and generous mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed.

Liz is survived by her daughter Erin E. McFadden and grandson Henry Bratton of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by a son, Brendan Patrick McFadden, her parents John and Shirley Horan, sister Teresa Lekarczyk, and brothers Thomas and Joseph Horan. She is survived by her sisters Mary Fieweger, Eileen Piantodosi and brothers John J. Horan, Dennis B. Horan and Christopher Horan. She also leaves Diana Garvey, her dear friend since childhood.

Cremation has taken place. Per her wishes, there will be no service.
