John E. “Chase” Chism
July 9, 1952 – Oct. 19, 2004
Mr. John E. “Chase” Chism, 52, beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle of Sarasota, Fla., departed this life on Tuesday, Oct.19. He was born on July 9, 1952, in South Bend, Ind., to the union of Reverend James T.and Lillian Chism. He graduated from Central High School, and attended Indiana University of South Bend. John was a Vietnam-era veteran, serving from 1972 to 1974.
On Oct.5, 1979, he married in holy matrimony Shirley M. Buchanan, in Boulder, Colo. In 1992, John and his family moved to Sarasota. Loving family members who survive and cherish memories of him include his wife, Shirley Chism; a son, Jason Lamont Chism of Sarasota; four daughters, Crystal Johnson of Hayward, Calif., Alisha (Montay) Merritt of Niles, Mich., Clarissa Lillian Chism of Bradenton, Fla., and Bonita Maxie of South Bend; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene (Elaine) Chism of Bettendorf, Iowa, and James Charles Chism of South Bend; two sisters, Charlotte (Lonnie) Taylor of South Bend, Shirley (Willie) Chew of Merrillville, Ind., along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
John was preceded in death by his son, Demetri Buchanan; his parents, Reverend Jams and Lillan Chism; his step-mother, Gussie Chism; and a stepbrother and stepsister.
Services for Mr. John E. “Chase” Chism will be held at noon Saturday, Oct.23, in the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Friends may call one hour prior to services. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford’s Mortuary
