Sandra Elizabeth Miller

October 22, 1935 – March 19, 2021

Sandra “Sandy” Elizabeth Miller passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021 at her residence in South Bend, Indiana. She was born on October 22, 1935 in South Bend, to Galen R. and Lillian E. "Betty" (Harding) Miller, who were transplants from Constantine, Michigan, to South Bend, when her father began work at Bendix Corporation in 1935.

While still a student at Michigan State University (then Michigan State College) in the 1950s, Sandra’s grandmother, Nellie Elizabeth (Johnson) Miller of Constantine, MI, stirred her interest in family history by making her the custodian of the Bible of great-great-grandmother, Sarah Catherine (Owen) Miller. It had passed through the hands of her great-grandfather, John Sherman Miller, and grandfather, Clyde Eli Miller (both deceased by that time). In the Bible, she found written the birth, death, and marriage records of Sarah Catherine (Owen) and her husband, John Kirk Miller. Sandra was fascinated to think that these people, complete strangers to her until this time, actually were her ancestors, and so started a long interest in genealogy, which took her all the way back to her fifth great-grandparents, Frederick and Euphemia (Schaefer) Miller, of Allentown, New Jersey.

Sandra was a graduate of South Bend Central High School, Michigan State University, and Western Michigan University. She was head of the English department at Brandywine High School in Niles, Michigan, and a high school counselor at Edwardsburg High School, Edwardsburg, Michigan.

Sandra is survived by her younger sister, Betty Gail (Miller) Schuessler of Tucson, Arizona; her nephew, Michael K. Schuessler; and niece, Leslie Elizabeth Schuessler of Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Sandra is also survived by her uncle, Sharon Miller of West Point, Virginia; and cousins, Lori Walsh of Mishawaka, IN, Mark Brown of Constantine, and Diane (Miller) Babcock of White Pigeon, Michigan.

There will be no services held at this time. Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
