John L. Ward

February 10, 1943 ~ May 17, 2023 (age 80)

Mr. John Lewis Ward, 80 years of age of South Bend, IN transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord
on Wednesday May 17, 2023. John was born February 10,1943 to the union of Eddie and
Luvenia (Horne) Ward, Sr in South Bend, IN.  

John accepted Christ at an early age he was a faithful member of Grace AME Zion Church; there he
continued his spiritual journey throughout his entire life.  

John was a graduate of South Bend Central High School. He then went on to work for the State of
Indiana children hospital (NISH) for over 25 years. He continued his love of caring for the
developmentally disabled adults and children with Logan Community Resources for over 10 years.  
John would often referral to himself as the last of the Mohicans, he was the baby of six siblings and was
the last living member of the second generation of the Ward family. John was known by many as he
would often been seen riding the bus around South Bend. He loved family get togethers especially
Christmas he never failed to arrive with several large bags of gifts for everyone.  

John Leaves to cherish his memory his nieces Anita Ferguson, Karla Riley, Maria Jones, Sandi Ward
Michelle Person, and Kelly Person all of South Bend, Tanya Ward of Phoenix, AZ, Kathy Person of
Charlotte, NC and Ronette Hicks of Pflugerville Texas. Nephews Lewis Price of South Bend and Owen
Gary of Lafayette, IN a host of great and great, great nieces and nephews. Special friends Donna and
Walter Chadwell. Preceding John in death were his parents, Eddie and Luvenia Ward, Sr; sisters Georgia
Price, Anna Ward, Helen Person and Wilma Gary, and one brother Eddie Ward, Jr. The family wishes to
thank the staff of Heart-to-Heart hospice team for their caring and giving support.  

Funeral Service will be at 11am on Friday, May 26, 2023, in Grace A.M.E. Zion Church, 1211 Vassar Ave.,
South Bend, IN 46628, where family and friends may begin to gather at 10am. Entombment will follow
at Riverview Cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home – West Chapel 2702 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN
46628 is assisting the family with arrangements.
