SOUTH BENDLawrence "Larry" Mays of North Johnson Street, departed from this life at 12:10 a.m. Saturday, January 24, in Memorial Hospital. Larry was a graduate of Central High School and a member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church.

He was born to Shirley (Fields) Umble on September 25, 1946, in Pine Bluff, AR. Shirley united with Fred Umble to raise her son in South Bend. Larry married Carolyn Curry, who preceded him in death, and to that union came a daughter, Donyele Teague, and son, Tony Walker of South Bend.

He leaves to cherish his memory devoted love of life companion, Christine Dotson; children, Darrell Mays, Kimberly James, Regina Frierson, Brian Umble, Terence Agnew, Darnell Starr, Tia Smith and Ashley Starr.

Larry was a loving brother to Vanessa and Eric Johnson. He was loved by a host of grandchildren, relatives and friends.

Mr. Mays was employed by the Chrysler Corporation of Detroit, where he developed his entrepreneurial spirit of auto detailing.

Those who preceded him in death include his mother, Shirley Umble; his father, Fred Umble; and a grandmother, Georgiana Snelling.

Funeral services for Mr. Lawrence Mays will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 29, in Alford's Mortuary. Viewing will take place at the chapel one hour prior to services.
