Gregory Charles Matafin
July 2, 1948 - October 26, 2024
Gregory Charles Matafin, 76, of Mishawaka, passed away unexpectedly at Memorial Hospital surrounded by loved ones after a period of declining health.
Greg was born July 2, 1948, to the late Joseph and Monica (Hudak) Matafin. He graduated from Central High School in 1966 and was a wrestling state heavyweight champion that same year. In 1970 he graduated from Indiana State University at Terre Haute. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers shortly after. In March 1984 he caught the largest bass with Roland Martin during a fishing competition and won a Ranger bass boat. He loved fishing and John Wayne movies. Most of all he loved helping his family.
Greg and Vickie Ann (Grant) Matafin were together for over forty years and they married in 1986. In 1988 they had a daughter Amanda, who was the apple of his eye. Throughout the years he always made time to take her on daddy-daughter dates at Root Beer stands and fishing trips. He also helped raise his two step-children whom he loved dearly. He was loved by his neighbors and all the children. Family, both blood and found, was always his priority.
He is survived by his wife, Vickie, his two daughters Amanda Mak of Mishawaka, and Megan Barrett of Mishawaka, a son Jon Barrett of Valparaiso, grandchildren Kalei Wierzbicki, Conner Barrett, and Theresa Barrett, all of Valparaiso, sister Sandra Nawrucki of Lakeville, brother-in-law Bob Nawrucki, brother-in-law Victor Budd of Sturgis, MI, brother-in-law Allen (Sherry) Grant of Angola, son-in-law David Mak of Mishawaka, daughter-in-law Tammy Barrett of Valparaiso, grandson-in-law Josh Wierzbicki, Joey Stankich boyfriend of Theresa, and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by sister Vicki Budd and brother-in-law Robert Przybylski.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024 at 12:00pm at Chapel Hill in Osceola, IN.
