John C. Stith

John C. Stith, 79, of 21983 Kimberly Drive, Goshen, Ind., died of natural causes at 2:40 a.m. Monday, July 29, in his home. John was born July 3, 1923, in South Bend, Ind., 1 to Frederick L. and Ethel (Lewis) (Miller) Stith, who have preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and a brother, Ruth Simpson, Marqurite Stokes, Arlyne Johnson and Evelyn Stith, and Edward Lewis Stith.

On March 24, 1947, in Louisville, Ky., he married Joyce Brown, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, LeJuna M. Stith of Elkhart, Ind., and Jacqueline (Mrs. Phillip) Derrickson of Mishawaka, Ind.; two sisters, Odessa (Mrs. John) Terry of Cleveland, Ohio, and Josephine Mitchell of South Bend; a brother, Frederick L. Stith Jr. of Louisville; and by five grandchildren.

He was a retired Goshen postmaster where he worked from April 1977 to July 1, 1988. He graduated from Central High School in South Bend and attended Kentucky State College in Frankfort, Ky. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Maplecrest Country Club, a past president of the Goshen Kiwanis Club, past president of the Exchange Club of Elkhart County, on the board of Greencroff Foundation, Oaklawn and Salvation Army, the Goshen Traffic Commission, Elks Lodge #298 in South Bend, and was a member of ALANA Advisory Group at Goshen College.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, in Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams St., South Bend, with Pastor Robert Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, and from 11 a.m. until time of services Friday in the church.
