Issiah Jackson

July 18, 1916 - June 18, 2002

Issiah Jackson, 85, of South Bend, Ind., died after a brief illness on Tuesday, June 18, in Houston, Texas. Issiah (Lanky) was born- July 18, 1916, in Sunflower County, Miss., to Felix Jackson Sr. and Julia Bronson. He moved to South Bend with his family at the age of nine.

After graduating from Central High School, he joined the U.S. Army, becoming one of their first black lieutenants. Issiah worked as an auditor with the Indiana Employment Security Division and as the first director of the South Bend Manpower Planning Council. Issiah was active in the South Bend community as a member of the Algonquin's Social Club, Kiwanis Club and VFW. He was a lifelong area member of the NAACP. He served on the boards of the Salvation Army and the South Bend Hotel Tax Board.

He was a devoted member of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. James, and over the years served as vestryman and advocacy volunteer.

Issiah leaves behind a loving wife, Syble; three devoted daughters, Urlene Jackson Branch of St. Louis, Mo., Janice Caddie (husband Kelly) of Houston and Eunice Jackson of New York City. Three brothers, Felix Jackson of Columbia, Mo., Roosevelt Jackson of Atlanta, Ga., and Frank Jackson of Vallejo, Calif., also survive. He also leaves behind many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

His parents, his brother, Timothy, and a sister, Alberta, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at St. James Cathedral, 117 N. Lafayette, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25.
