George Eldon Shafer

George Eldon Shafer was born April 9, 1903 in Lakeville, Indiana. He was raised on a farm on Miami Rd. George and Gertrude Miller-Shafer were his parents. He had two brothers: Robert and Allen Shafer and two sisters; Florence Shafer-Smith and Mary Shafer-Rader.

He attended Annis School a one room school in Lakeville, Indiana. He moved up to his Grandparents farm "Sunny Banks" on the N.E. corner of Ireland Rd. and Miami Rd. He attended Central High School and went on to Cincinnati University. He married Lucinda Fertick from Dayaton, Ohio.

They lived in Dayton in the early years of their marriage and had three children: Bill, June and Gene Shafer.

They moved to the old Tibbetts-Miller farm on Roosevelt Rd and farmed until the late 1938 when they moved to U.S. 31 known as Dixie Hwy. There they had one additional daughter Carol. He worked at the South Bend Awing Co. as engineer of the plant. He was a member of the Masonic lodge No 396, Eastern Star, White Shrine, and Ft. Wayne Men's Shrine. He loved mechanical work and developed many new sewing attachments for various types of work for the Awing Co. He was a dedicated church worker and was a man of strong faith which he received from his parents and his German Dunkard (Miller) grandparent's training with the help of God's grace. He made sure all his children attended Church and Church camp at Oakwood Park. He was a quiet man with high moral values. Excellent father and role model.
