Homer Elmer Fassnacht

Homer Elmer Fassnacht, 92, a lifetime South Bend resident and prominent area businessman, died at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton Grove, a retirement home in New Carlisle. He had been ill for three weeks. He was born in South Bend on March 31, 1887, the son of Carolyn Freyermuth land Christopher Fassnacht, pioneer South Bend building contractor and namesake of Fassnacht Street.
He grew up in one of the oldest homes in the area, the old Chapin House, which his father moved to the corner of Park and Navarre Streets, and later lived at 607 Park for most of his life. He was retired in 1958 from the Indiana Lumber and Manufacturing Co., where he had been purchasing agent since 1906.
On Oct. 11, 1911, in South Bend, he married Ethel Jackson. She survives, along with two daughters, Mrs. Jean E. Pearce of Tokyo and Mrs. Lewis (Lois) Haber of South Bend; two sons, H. Jackson of Niles and William Christopher of Stamford, Conn.; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William. Rev. Gary Forbes, D.M., pastor of First United Methodist Church, will officiate. He will be assisted by Rev. Lester Bill. Burial will be in City Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. Fassnacht was a member of the First United Methodist Church; Portage Lodge 675, F&AM; the Scottish Rite, Valley of South Bend; Chapter 29, Royal Arch Masons; Council 82, Royal and Select Masons, and the South Bend Commandry 13, Knights Templar.
He also was a member of the Senior Citizens and Men's Breakfast Clubs of the church, the South Bend Civic Planning Association, the South Bend Garden Club and the Izaak Walton League. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church
