Joyce Marie (Mitchell) Patterson

Joyce Marie Patterson (Granny), 72, surrounded by her family, passed away at Memorial Hospital on November 30th 2024 at 10:23 p.m. Joyce was born on May 1st, 1952 to Jermat Mitchell and Adolph Lottie, who both preceded her in Death.
Joyce spent her life laughing, loving and living in a city she loved, South Bend, IN. To know her was to love her. Joyce was beloved by all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and family alike. She lit up a room with her smile and her heart was full of love and kindness. She welcomed everyone as her door was always open. She was a giving person and extended a hand in friendship to all, and she never met a stranger. On February 19th 1992 she married Dennis Patterson. That union lasted ten years.
Joyce attended Linden Grade School, South Bend Central High School and graduated from Adams High School in 1970. Joyce also received an associate’s degree from Ivy Tech. Joyce was employed at W.J. Hagerty and Sons, Signature Group, and Martin’s Super Market.
Joyce accepted Christ at an early age, and again reuniting with Christ at Grace AME Zion Church in her later years. A memorable moment for a Church Black History event she dressed as the character Stagecoach Mary, a trailblazing Black American pioneer. She played that character to a “T”! Joyce loved modern dancing and sharing special moments with her family at Thanksgiving Dinners and backyard cookouts.
Joyce was preceded in death by her mother Jermat Mitchell, father Adolph Lottie, daughter Jacqueline Renee Moore, Brother Glenn Alan Mitchell, and best friends Judy Purnell and Charlene Chandler
Joyce leaves to cherish her memories 5 children, son Bruce (Shannon) Mitchell Sr. of Las Vegas, NV, son-in-law Andre Moore Sr. of Indianapolis, IN, daughters: Ameka Welch, Kea Brown, and Turquoise Leonard all of South Bend, IN; sisters: Sharon Mitchell of Osceola, IN, Michele {Ronnie} Perry of South Bend, IN and Dana Stacker of Gary, IN; brothers Avance (Aletha) Highsmith of Granger, IN, Damon (Carmen) Mitchell and Ricardo Lottie, both of Indianapolis, IN, and David Winborn of South Bend, IN; 21 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, Aunts, Uncles, cousins and a special friend Michael Purnell.
Joyce Marie Patterson will always be loved and greatly missed!
Memorial Services for Joyce will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Palmer Funeral Home – West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway W. South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
