Nov. 7, 1918 – May 29, 2004

Martin Walbert, 85, of Shamrock Gardens Assisted Living Center, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 4:10 a.m.on Saturday, May 29, in Regency Place. He was born on Nov.7, 1918, in South Bend, to Walter and Mary (Murach) Wojciechowski, who preceded him in death. Brothers, Frank, Joe, John and Al, along with Casimir and Stephen, who died in infancy, along with sisters, Mary and Lottie, are all deceased.

In 1956 Martin married Jeanne Walbert, who passed away on Oct.29, 1967. He then married Ellen Walbert in 1968, who passed away on March 16, 2004.

Surviving Martin is a daughter, Barbara (Jim) Dye of Highland, Ind.;sons, Mike Walbert of South Bend and Richard (Paulette) Obrecht of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Stephanie Smartz of Mishawaka;along with 12 nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Central High School in 1936, then Coyne Electrical School, Chicago, Ill., in 1940.Martin was a World War II veteran who enlisted in the United States Army in November 1940, then transferred to the Air Force, where he held the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged in October 1945. He served with the 20th Air Force 500th Bombardment Group.Martin worked for Studebaker’s, I&M and AEP until he retired in 1984. Martin enjoyed watching football, especially the Bears, Packers and most of all Notre Dame. He also enjoyed reading and spending time with family.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, June 19, at 10 a.m.in St. Hedwig Church.Burial will be at St.Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. St.Joseph Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
