Silas Jackson

Dec. 26, 1922 - June 30, 2002

Silas Jackson, 79, of North Sheridan Street, South Bend, Ind., peacefully passed away after an extended illness at 12:06 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, in his home. Silas was born on Dec. 26, 1922, in Swiftown, Miss., to the union of the late Joseph and Beatrice (Linkson) Jackson Sr.

He received his primary education in LeFlora County Public Schools in Mississippi, and attended high school at South Bend Central. Silas enlisted in the United States Army on Feb. 3, 1943, and ended his tour of duty with an honorable discharge on Feb, 2, 1946. As a World War II veteran he received an American Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one bronze star, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War I| Victory Medal.

On Sept. 16, 1950, in Michigan City, Ind., he was united in marriage to Lizan (Reed) Jackson, who survives. To this union six children were born, who also survive. They include three sons, Allen *A.D." Jackson, Jimmy Lee Jackson and Arvester "Vest" Jackson; and three daughters, Norma Jean Pearson, Erma "Bey-Bey" Jackson and Annette Jackson, all of South Bend. Other survivors include a daughter, LaKeisha "Toot" Jackson, also of South Bend; 20 grandchildren and 21 -grandchildren; three sisters, Rebecca Jones of Swiftown, Miss., Rosie D. Turner of South Bend and Bonnie Tyes (and Patrick), both of Long Beach, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Minnie Lee Reed of Crawfordsville, Ark., and Lillie Bea Jennings of Chicago, Ill.; one stepson, Reverend Richard Jennings of Dover, Del.; a special uncle, Walter Brentson of Cleveland, Ohio; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Silas was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Jackson Jr.; one sister, Beatrice "Bea-Bea" Jackson; a stepdaughter, Mae Lee Nelson; two brothers-in-law, Eddie Jones and Wiley Turner; and two sisters-in-law, Rena Jackson and Frances Barrett.

Silas retired from White Farm Equipment after 30 years of employment.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 5, in the Cobb Funeral Home, South Bend Chapel, 3525 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services in the funeral home
