Earl Howard Kuhny
Teacher, Coach, dies at 78
Earl Howard Kuhny, 78, of 1946 Portage, died at 7:30 p. m Sunday in Healthwin Hospital after a five-week illness. He had moved here in 1923 and taught social studies and was head of the social studies department at Central High School until his retirement in 1968. He had coached basketball at the school. He was born on May 17, 1899, in Chicago and had lived here since 1923, when he came from Franklin, Ind. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Franklin College in 1923 and was a member of the Franklin Wonder Five basketball team, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. In 1927, he received a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame.
On Aug. 3, 1928, in Burlington, Iowa, Kuhny married Virginia Youngquist, who survives, along with a daughter, Mrs. Harold Brooks of Ashville, N.C.; a son, Robert E. of South Bend; eight grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Richard Renner of Washington, Ind.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church; a former lay leader; a past president of the board of directors, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Mizpah Class and a member of the choir, all of the church. He was a member of the former Central Teacher's Association; and the National, State; and local Retired Teacher's Associations:
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William. The time of services will be announced.
