Miss Marguerite DeGroote, 79, of 1017 E. Madison, died at 11:30 A.M. Friday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after a one year illness. She was born on Oct. 23, 1904, in Mishawaka and lived in this area for 55 years, coming from Michigan. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Thomas B. Dorris of Martinez, Calif., and Mrs. Louise Beckerich of Mishawaka; and a brother, Charles W. DeGroote of New Carlisle.

She was a former teacher, retiring in 1971 after 44 years of teaching here and in Michigan, Florida and Illinois. She received a B.A. degree from St. Mary's College and her master's degree from Indiana University. She taught English at the former Washington-Clay and Central High Schools and speech and dramatics at Lincoln and Jefferson elementary schools.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Herbert Yost, CSC, officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Hickey Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame.

She served as president of the St. Joseph County Retired Educators' Association and president of the former Central High School Teachers' Association. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Altar Society, the American Association of University Women, and alumni associations of Saint Mary's and Indiana University.
