Ethurel P. Ivory, Sr.
April 6, 1928 - July 11, 1997
Ethurel Patterson "Pat" Ivory, Sr., 69, died after an extended illness on Friday, July 11, in his residence on North Wellington Street, South Bend, Ind. He was born to the union of Grant and Magnolia Ivory on April 6, 1928, in Blytheville, Ark., and had lived in South Bend for 62 years, coming from Chicago, Ill.
He attended the former Central High School and Indiana University Bloomington.
On June 2, 1948, in South Bend, he was united in marriage to Alice Cobb, who survives. He is also survived by four daughters, Marilyn (Charles) Easton, Bobbi Gail (Ivory) Parkes, Patricia Eileen (Michael) Fisher, Jacquelyn Darlene Ivory, all of South Bend; four sons, Ethurel Patterson (Brenda) Ivory, Jr., Sheldon Ivory, Carlton (Nancy) Ivory, Keith Ivory, all of South Bend; 27 grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Smith of South Bend and Carrie Scott of Atlanta, Ga.; and a brother, Grant (Geraldine) Ivory of Oakland, Calif.
Pat was a hard worker. Leaving his position at Studebaker, he worked at A & M General as a foreman. After his retirement from White Farm Equipment, he started community volunteer services, working with former mayors Lloyd M. Allen, Roger Parent and Joseph E. Parent. Mr. Ivory was precinct community man for District 6, Precinct 17, for the past 16 years. He worked with Action Incorporated, the LaSalle Park Neighborhood Council, and with the LaSalle Park Neighborhood Center.
Mr. Ivory was also overseer for the Flying Squad, a group of young men who went around the city for the upkeep of vacant lots. He oversaw the distribution of government commodities and the for the LaSalle Neighborhood Center. Mr. Ivory received numerous awards for his outstanding community services.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Pentecostal Cathedral Church of God in Christ
